Streets and not Highways: Activation of Place

In the city of Brisbane in the year 2028, the streets of the city will become pedestrian zones. The implementation of green space, as well as corner stores and residential areas will help to ensure these remain as community streets and do not become 'highways', where the only people using them are people walking through the space. This is something that I do not want to happen in the public space that I am designing. Although it is designed to be used by commuters on their way to and from work, this does not mean that it will lose all sense of place.

To ensure that this does not happen, there will be several 'activators placed around the site. This will be done to ensure that there ar epeople using the space during none peak hours, and to soften the feel of the public space so that it does not become to harsh and imposing.

The spaces that will be added are
- a bar and resturant
- a public pool
- a garden space
- a relaxation space
- a family area
- a reflection zone
- a coffee stall

The location of these space can be seen below.

These spaces need to be designed so that they will work with each other to form an overall identity for the space. More importantly they will become destinations within the space, which will attract people to it that were not passing through the space due to their commute. This idea of a destination al space is something that I identified early as being needed to help this project to succeed.
