Roof Plan and Danpalon

The movement or people through the space is the original concept and one of the most important aspects of the building. The initial drawing of movement through the space is the driver of the design. It carries through in the floor plan, as well as sections of the building. However due to the complex nature of the spaces, this is not always apparent to users of the spaces. One way that this can be improved is to carry the pattern through on to the roof plan.

One way to do this is through the use of beams to create a pattern on the roof, with glass between the beams. The image below shows the initial design of the roof.

This will allow for the initial design pattern to be more apparent from all aspects of the space. The final roof plan can be seen below.

The spaces in between the fins will use a product called Danpalon to provide protection from the weather. This product is polycarbonate roofing and will slightly less transparent then glass, creating the effect of a solid roof, however responding to the external environment. The product can be viewed on this website http://www.danpalon.net.au/

The roof is designed to cover most of the public space, in particular those places that are used to activate the space. Due to the intensity of the summer heat this is something that is necessary. The space that will remain uncovered is the public pool at the top of the space. There will be some shading over the pool and the areas around the pool.
