Defining Space

There are multiple types of space that are needed in the building. Firstly there is the commercial office for nanotechnology, however that is not the part of the building that I want to focus on. I am much more interested in the public spaces that surround the bottom of a building like this, and how they can be designed to benefit the users of the building as well as the users of the city. The design of the tower will need to have some connections to the public space, to ensure that it does not become cut off from the intentions of the space. The building should not simply be a vertical extrusion from the ground plain. There needs to be some connection to the concept of the public space, which can be seen below.

The second space that is needed is a train station for the Brisbane Maglev station that was a large part of the first assignment  The train would circle the city ideally above the city streets, due to the bus routes running below the streets. Due to the nature of a maglev train this would be quiet and easy to maintain, making it able to connect to the pubic space without disrupting the quality of the space with noise.
Thirdly there needs to be some form of retail activity in the main area, below the tower. This is to help to stimulate the space, providing some form of destination for users. It will also help to define the nature of the space, as shops can be chosen by management to appeal to a certain demographic. This sort of selective leasing has been proven to work already in the city of Brisbane. Southbank Corporation has chosen the business it wants trading in the area and has created what is arguably the cities most family friendly, relaxing and safe environment.
There also needs to be connections along the pedestrian routes to existing streets. So the centre will connect to Queen Street, Albert Street, Elizabeth Street and George Street. This will also help to draw more people into the space, creating a richer experience. The connection to George Street will be the smallest, due to the fact that George Street will continue to be used by cars.

All of these spaces need to be integrated with each other to form a rich public space that reads a one continuous space, changing in places but maintaining the same identity.
